Only a few of the Hohenzollern palaces around Berlin and Potsdam have experienced such an up and down in their history as Palace Paretz. The simple palace was built in 1797by David Gilly for the Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (III) of Prussia and his wife Luise. The foundations and parts of the brickworks of the old estate from the early 18th century were used. Queen Luise died already 1810 and until the death of Friedrich Wilhelm III in the year 1840 the rooms in the royal residence stayed untouched. As requested by the king's still living seven children the rooms were not used at all and only servedthe memory of the highly honoured parents. This was done until 1945. The original interior of the palace from the years 1797/98 was considered until then as one of the most outstanding examples for interior of Berliner early classism in its middle-class characteristic especially the colourful painted respectively printed wallpapers. In this view the most famous room was and still is the garden hall in the centre of the house. The events of the years immediately after 1945 then nearly lead to total loss of the interior. Only the wallpaper of the royal residence could be rescued but only by sheer lucky coincidence in 1947 and were deposited in Potsdam. Through rebuilding and demolishing measures in the following years, which totally disfiguredthe historicalexterior of the palace, the idea of restoration seemed illusive. But the state of Brandenburg as new owner after the reunification made capital for the rebuildingof the palace available and the Cornelsen-Kulturstiftung Berlin for the wallpaper restoration and so the jewel thought lost forever was from 1999 to 2001 authentically restored and furnished. The rooms of the royal residence have been open to the public sinceSeptember 2001 as museum's palace. Further rooms at the west wing are available for exhibitions. It is plalned for the next year to use the upper story as museum.
Palace Paretz reradiates again and its doors, which were looked for decades are now open for visits.
